Shift At Midnight
Shift At Midnight puts up to three players behind the counter of a gas station that stays open all night. You stock shelves, take deliveries and hit a sales quota, but the real job is at the register — every customer hands you an ID, and some of them are doppelgangers wearing a face that is not theirs. Serve one without noticing and it comes back before the shift ends.

Shift At Midnight is a co-op horror game built on a simple, nasty premise: the monster has to get past you, and the only tools you have are an ID scanner and a conversation.
What you actually do in a shift
The shop half of the game is deliberately mundane. Shelves empty as customers buy things, deliveries arrive that have to be put away, mess accumulates, and a quota has to be met before the night ends. None of it is difficult on its own.
The difficulty is that all of it happens while you are supposed to be screening people. Every customer who reaches the register needs their items packed, their ID scanned and their details checked against the database. Fall behind on the shop and you rush the screening; take your time on the screening and the quota slips away from you.
The doppelgangers
Doppelgangers are creatures that impersonate specific people — not generic monsters, but copies of named individuals whose details sit in the same database you are checking against. They come through the door looking like someone you might have served on any other night.
Get it right and you can execute one on the spot, then clean up what is left. Get it wrong in either direction and the night turns: shoot a real person and you have shot a real person, or wave a doppelganger through and it comes back once the store is dark, no longer pretending.
When that happens the game stops being about retail. You board up the doors, set traps and hide.
Where to go next
Start with the customer roster if you want to get better at the register, since knowing who can walk in is most of the job. The shift breakdown covers how a full night is structured and where the time actually goes, and the story pages collect what the game reveals about where the doppelgangers came from and how a run can end. The wiki holds the terms and systems the other pages assume you know.
Not bought it yet? Where to buy it covers both storefronts, including the Game Pass route most write-ups miss, and there is still a free demo on Steam — unusually, it was left up after release rather than pulled on launch day.
Already own it and cannot get in? The developer has published a beta branch that fixes most lobby failures, and what is currently broken sets out which of the remaining problems have a fix and which do not.

Frequently asked questions
What is Shift At Midnight about?
You work the night shift at a gas station with up to two other players. Alongside ordinary shop duties — restocking, deliveries, cleaning and meeting a nightly quota — you have to screen every customer at the register, because some of them are doppelgangers impersonating real people. Miss one and it returns later in the shift to hunt you.
Is Shift At Midnight multiplayer?
Yes. Steam lists it as online co-op for up to three players, and it also supports single-player. Working alone means covering the register, the shelves and the deliveries yourself, which is why most guidance assumes a team splitting those roles.
How much does Shift At Midnight cost?
It is $9.99 on Steam and released on 22 July 2026.
How do you tell a doppelganger from a real customer?
Two checks. Scan the ID and compare the database photo against the person standing in front of you, then question them — a doppelganger will answer some questions wrongly or in a way that does not fit the person it is copying. Neither check alone is reliable, which is the whole tension of the game.
Are the shifts always the same?
No. Each shift is randomly generated, so which customers show up, which of them are doppelgangers, and the order they arrive in all change between runs.
